So I made a new account, earthaboveskybelow. It’s unfinished at the moment, but it’ll be polished up some in the days to come.
This blog and my accompanying Star Wars sideblog fandumbandflummery are going to just be archives from now on, and eventually deleted by me once I’ve finished mined the archives for the good parts, or much sooner the tumblr staff because they saw a pink-ish rock or smth.
Either way this place is more or less gonna be dead, now.
I won’t be doing much actual text-posting/post-chatting on my new blog, as it’ll mostly just be a reblog-blog for science fiction aesthetics and art, with some historical images for flavor.
If that appeals to you, go on and follow but I won’t be too talkative if you send asks (The instant messages however are fine, I’ll still happily chat with people via those).
I repeat, this blog is becoming an archive either today or tomorrow, follow for science fiction/historical images and aesthetics at earthaboveskybelow.
Want to make this brush? Just make a perfect circle and save it (I call mine “round”) and use it as the bitmap, and copy the settings above. It works pretty nicely :D
aHHHH HOLY SHIT WHEN DID THIS POST START TRENDING?!
*If English is not your native language, you can download it in other languages.
Please download from the official FireAlpaca websites, because a friend of mine simply googled FireAlpaca and downloaded from some random site, and she got malware! So PLEASE be careful.
FireAlpaca has a suggestion/bug reporting box on their site so you can request features, or let them know if you’re having any issues! Also FireAlpaca works fantastically on Mac computers! (though I will say the only time FA has crashed on me is when I used a Mac, so PLEASE save your work often)
Also, please visit these tumblrs if you do get into using FireAlpaca:
Anonymous asked: So how do you color? You said you don't color that way anymore (in the mega ask thing) and I'm curious because I want to become a better artist and you are my favorite (also I took pics of these piranhas my friends own if you are interested)
HMM the biggest difference between how i Used to color and how i do it now is that almost everything ends up shoved onto one layer! im using photoshop cs2, but id imagine most drawing probably have something similar to what im doing
like. lets walk through coloring this little monster head, somethin quick
first the sketch, then outline on a new layer, so youve got your base lineart and everything (i usually dont label layers but itll make it easier to tell whats goin on ayy)
THEN i make a new layer underneath the lines, and fill in everything i plan on coloring with one solid hue. it doesnt matter what color it IS, as long as everything within the lines is touched
NEXT i lock the layer as seen up top, which makes it so any lines i put down afterwards on that layer will ONLY effect the places where ive already drawn (aka, the big color blob)
THEN with the layer locked ill go in and make the flats, filling in the basic colors for what goes on what. thats followed by taking a really dark color, setting a bursh on a super low opacity, and going in for the shadows and highlights, once again all on the same dang layer.
it took me a REALLY long time before i was confident enough to actually try this ! and with things that im nervous with, i still split up the flats and shading in case i really mess up
AFTERWARDS i make a new layer right over the lineart, take a really fine brush, (usually around three-five pixels depending on the canvas) select a color slightly lighter than the colors surrounding it, and go RIGHT ALONG over the top edge of the lineart. i also use this tiny brush to fill in little details, like highlights or fur !
FINALLY i got back to the lineart layer, lock THAT one, take another brush on a low opacity, and start blending in the lineart with the color inside so the contrast isnt so harsh. and thats it ! honestly there still a LOT of issues with this system i need to work out, but im gonna keep going till i get there

Don’t get me wrong, I love it when people design medieval fantasy clothing based on western European fashions, because they were awesome (did somebody say chaperon?) but there was lot of great design in eastern Europe and the Byzantine Empire too.
I’m pretty sure the second picture is actually 16th century Hungarian dress, but I’ll let it in because it looks cool.
